Participatory projects

Exploring new places and creating encounters - in the city, in the provinces, in the Vienna State Opera itself or in our new venue: NEST!

The participatory programs are a place for encounters and discussions about opera, theater, dance and topics that concern and interest us all! There is space here for your own creative practice and your ideas. You can gain insights behind the scenes, try your hand at improvisation and theater, develop dramaturgies and plays or become composers and choreographers.

No special prior knowledge is required to take part in the Vienna State Opera's outreach projects, just the desire and courage to try something new in a group!

We are happy to answer questions about our participatory offers by e-mail at outreach@wiener-staatsoper.at.

Participatory projects

Be part of it!

CityLab, Opera Lab, Dance Labs

Develop a new play together and perform it on stage!

In the participatory play development projects, a new play is developed over the course of a year, which is then performed with live music in front of an audience. Over the course of a season, the newly founded community ensemble works regularly with professionals from the Vienna State Opera and through various artistic and creative approaches to new music, stories and roles as well as dramaturgy and choreography. The piece development projects are free of charge, everyone is welcome!

The "OpernStoff" podcast goes behind the scenes at the Vienna State Opera. There are conversations with artists and staff and you get exclusive insights into exciting new productions at the opera house with the largest repertoire in the world.

The episodes can be accessed via Spotify and Amazon Music .

The participants (target group varies depending on the workshop) are invited to get to know the special features of an opera or ballet (new) production in the house through improvisations, scenic play, making music together or movement exercises. They can create their own musical theater scenes musically and scenically or develop small choreographies in the group. At the end of the course, the group will attend a performance at the Vienna State Opera or NEST on a subsequent day.

What can I expect?

A physical warm-up, singing and making music together under the guidance of a musician or a theater teacher, scenic play and improvisation in the group, a discourse on a topic or a character from an opera or a ballet as well as the presentation of the works developed on the day to the group. Depending on the topic, there are also impulses from cooperation partners. There is also an introduction to the selected work and playful preparation for the subsequent visit to the opera or ballet.

What is expected of me?

Desire and enjoyment of creative group processes in community. No previous artistic knowledge is required.

How often do the community workshops take place?

Several times a year. The workshops do not build on each other and can be booked individually.

Who are the workshops for?

They vary depending on the original work: sometimes for children and families, sometimes for teenagers and young adults (U27), sometimes for all generations.
The community workshops are also accessible for people with disabilities. Please let us know when you register.

How long do the workshops last?

3-4 hours plus a joint visit to the opera or ballet on a subsequent day.
