The Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera
With the start of Bogdan Roščić and Philippe Jordan's term of office in 2020/21, the Vienna State Opera has founded an opera studio to provide two years of targeted and practical support for outstanding singing talent.
Such a program not only enables the State Opera to establish an early, intensive relationship with the elite of the next generation of singers, but also challenges the opera house to address fundamental questions about quality, tradition and the comprehensive training of singing performers.
The Vienna State Opera's new opera studio is an indispensable project for the next generation of singers at a major repertoire house in order to promote and maintain singing excellence.
Founded in 2020, the training program is already an indispensable part of the Vienna State Opera. The two-year program aims to introduce young, outstanding singers to the challenges of the profession of an opera singer in a targeted and practical way.
During their training, the studio members are given the opportunity to deepen the skills they have acquired during their studies, to work with great artists from the international opera business and to benefit from their wealth of experience. The young singers receive a wide-ranging musical and scenic training program tailored to their personal needs and also perform on the stage of the Vienna State Opera in small and medium-sized roles. Master classes, rehearsal visits, movement training and workshops as well as participation in their own studio concerts in Vienna and other provinces round off the training.
The members of the opera studio receive a monthly training allowance.
A cooperation with the Music and Arts University of Vienna (MUK) enables studio members to attend individual courses at the MUK as part of an extraordinary study program free of charge.
After completing the program, the young artists should have the necessary prerequisites and skills to become part of a successful new generation of international opera artists. The first cohort of the Vienna State Opera's Opera Studio was already very successful: seven members of the first cohort received permanent ensemble contracts at the Vienna State Opera, while others were offered permanent engagements at other important opera houses. The current cohort consists of 14 young international singers who will complete the program in summer 2024.
The artistic director of the Vienna State Opera's opera studio is Michael Kraus, an internationally active baritone. The organizational management is in the hands of cultural manager and pianist Uta Sander.
