After studying singing in Lucerne and Zurich, she first sang in Lucerne and then as a member of the ensemble in Cologne and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She also enjoyed great success on all the world's major stages: New York Met, Salzburg Festival, Bavarian State Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, Liceu in Barcelona, Paris Opéra, Glyndebourne Festival, Hamburg State Opera.
Between 1960 and 1986, she sang major roles in her repertoire at the Vienna State Opera, including Pamina (41 times), Zerlina (32 times), Susanna (16 times), Cherubino (3 times), Marzelline (18 times), Ännchen (7 times), Rosenkavalier-Sophie (6 times), Zdenka (5 times). She was Bavarian Kammersängerin and professor at the Vienna University of Music. Her close collaboration with the best conductors of her time can be heard on various recordings.
