of the Commercial Managing Director of the Wiener Staatsoper GmbH


The Bundestheater-Holding GmbH, in agreement with the Federal Minister of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport, invites applications for the position of Commercial Director of the Wiener Staatsoper GmbH in accordance with § 12 para. 4 of the Federal Theatres Organization Act (BThOG). The position will be filled from September 1, 2025 for a period of up to five years.

The Vienna State Opera is the representative repertoire theater for opera and ballet in Austria. It has been one of the world's leading theaters for 150 years. This position must be maintained and further expanded.

Together with the artistic management, the commercial management is responsible in particular for economic control, financial planning and financial management, ticket sales, modern organizational and personnel development and personnel administration at the Vienna State Opera. Professional management, innovative and sustainable increase in income, such as ticket sales or sponsoring/fundraising, form an essential basis for the implementation of the cultural-political mission within the framework of available funds.

We are looking for a personality with extensive experience in the commercial management of a theater company or comparable experience in similarly structured companies, who will further develop the Vienna State Opera together with the artistic management in a team and future-oriented manner.

The following knowledge and skills are expected:

  • Degree in business administration or equivalent qualification and demonstrable experience in the organizational management of a large cultural enterprise (budgeting, planning, controlling, project management and strategic marketing) together with corresponding implementation skills

  • Knowledge of the relevant legal regulations, in particular corporate law and accounting as well as Austrian stage, labor and social law

  • Knowledge of national and international cultural life, its organizational environment and structural framework conditions

  • Experience in managing and dealing with employees and artists as well as a high level of communicative and integrative competence

  • Professional demeanor, negotiating experience and negotiating skills in artistic and administrative matters

  • Creativity, experience and special commitment in the development of modern ticket sales and sponsoring/fundraising

  • Foreign language skills, at least business fluent in English

The appointment is made by the Federal Minister of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport after consultation with the management of Bundestheater-Holding GmbH, the Supervisory Board and the artistic management of Wiener Staatsoper GmbH. Technical management

The Vienna State Opera is looking for two

lighting technicians

The positions are to be filled immediately on a full-time basis, 38 hours/week.

 

Tasks:

  • The installation, connection and lighting of spotlights on the stage, the lighting bridges and the galleries - in daily operations / during rehearsals and performances

  • Maintaining and carrying out repair work on the extensive lighting equipment

  • The production of custom-made lighting equipment

  • Computer-aided documentation of the various lighting equipment

 

Education:

Completed vocational training in an electrical trade - e.g. electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics

or

Completed vocational training as an event technician

 

Requirements:

  • Professional experience in a theater or in the field of event technology
  • As a male applicant, completed military or civilian service
  • No criminal record
  • Very good knowledge of German
  • Very good physical condition and resilience
  • High level of commitment
  • Manual dexterity and technical understanding
  • Absolutely no fear of heights/ability to work at heights
  • Ability to work in a team, reliability, accuracy, stress resistance, talent for improvisation
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends and public holidays as well as split shifts)

 

The collectively agreed starting salary is € 2,757.06 gross per month based on full-time employment.

To strengthen our make-up department we are looking for
Make-up artists, occasionally as evening help, starting immediately

Tasks during rehearsals / performances:

  • Supervision of rehearsals and performances
  • Making drawings (design sketches) and models
  • Fitting and adjusting wigs, hairpieces, beards and sideburns for the actors/singers
  • Fitting and adjusting bald heads, partially bald heads and hairy bald heads
  • Applying different types of make-up; natural, contemporary, advantageous, etc.
  • Make up parts of the face (e.g. wrinkles, scars, abrasions) and body parts (e.g. wounds, injuries, body deformations) or create them from modeling clay
  • During a production, make-up and make-up changes for the actors/singers on an ongoing basis
  • Applying body paint (bodypainting)
  • Removing make-up from actors/singers at the end of the working day
  • Providing cosmetic care for performers/singers (e.g. applying skin creams and lip balm)
  • Conduct team meetings
  • Properly clean the equipment used and store it in the storage room

Education and training:

  • Completed apprenticeship as a hairdresser and wig maker (stylist) or
  • Completed apprenticeship as a make-up artist or
  • Diploma in make-up artistry or
  • Make-up artist / make-up artist

Remuneration is in accordance with the 1999 collective agreement for technical personnel, and amounts to €69.92 gross per shift (4 to max. 6 hours) (subject to income tax only), and is a daily, marginal employment relationship with only accident insurance.

Ballet

To strengthen our team, we are now looking for a

Supervisor with pedagogical training for the Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera 40h/full-time


Tasks:

  • Administrative support (school area - school administration)
  • Supervision of the students (8 to 18 years) of the Ballet Academy during lessons and performances, during breaks and during non-teaching hours
  • Communication between students, parents/guardians and partner institutes
  • Interface between teachers, students and parents/guardians
  • Support and supervision of pupils in crisis and conflict situations
  • Active support from the Ballet Academy's confidential psychologist
  • Picking up and accompanying students to external events and appointments, e.g. rehearsals, performances, medical appointments
  • Support in the event of injuries (first aid)
  • Administrative and organizational activities (including administration of sick notes, data sheets and forms, preparation of school attendance certificates and report cards, organization of entrance examinations, parents' evenings and consultation days)
  • Active participation in the implementation of a student administration program

 

Requirements:

  • Completed pedagogical training, e.g. social pedagogy or comparable psychological/pedagogical training
  • Training as a paramedic is an advantage
  • Professional experience in the above-mentioned areas
  • Very good PC skills with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Excellent German and very good English skills, other foreign languages are an advantage
  • Empathy, resilience and communicative know-how, especially in relation to children and their parents, even in challenging situations
  • Organizational skills, ability to work in a team and enthusiasm for dance and music


The minimum salary according to the collective agreement is € 2,503.13 gross per month based on full-time employment. An overpayment from € 2,700 gross per month, depending on qualifications and experience, is possible.
