Stefan Cerny
The internationally sought-after Austrian bass Stefan Cerny studied opera, song and oratorio at the conservatory in his home city of Vienna and graduated with honors in 2004. In the course of his long-standing association with the Vienna Volksoper, he has celebrated successes as Ochs auf Lerchenau (Der Rosenkavalier), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Daland (Flying Dutchman), Leporello (Don Giovanni) and most recently King René (Jolanthe). He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2018 as Rocco (Fidelio) and was also heard as Osmin (Entführung aus dem Serail) and Titurel (Parsifal) before making his debut at London's Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) in 2019. His regular work at the Theater an der Wien includes roles such as Talbot (Maria Stuarda) and Swallow in the production of Peter Grimes, which won the “International Opera Award” in 2016. He received the Austrian Music Theater Prize in 2019 for his interpretation of the Doctor in Wozzeck. Other engagements have taken him to the Komische Oper Berlin, the Cologne Opera, the Opéra National de Lyon, the Bregenz Festival, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the state theaters in Munich and Nuremberg, the Musiktheater Linz, the Salzburg “Haus für Mozart”, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Dresden Philharmonie and many more.
