Nicola Luisotti, Principal Guest Conductor of Teatro Real Madrid, served as Music Director of Teatro di San Carlo from 2012 to 2014 and Music Director of the San Francisco Opera from 2009 to 2018, where he conducted over 40 operas and concerts since his debut in 2005. His work there included the world premiere of Marco Tutino’s La Ciociara, commissioned by the company, as well as Salome, Lohengrin, Don Carlo, and the Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy. In 2018, he was awarded the San Francisco Opera Medal for his exceptional artistic contributions.
Nicola Luisotti's recent engagements include his house debut at the Liceu in Barcelona with La forza del destino, Mefistofele at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Aida at the Berlin State Opera, Adriana Lecouvreur, Madama Butterfly, and Rigoletto at Teatro Real, as well as Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and the Stuttgart State Orchestra. He has also conducted concerts with the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Berlin Philharmonic, Accademia Santa Cecilia, San Francisco Symphony, London Philharmonia, Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and Cleveland Orchestra.
Equally acclaimed are his performances at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Paris Opéra, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Teatro Regio in Turin, the Bavarian State Opera, and at opera houses in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Dresden, Hamburg, Valencia, Zurich, Los Angeles Opera, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
In 2010, Nicola Luisotti received the 39th Premio Puccini Award at the Metropolitan Opera, commemorating the 100th anniversary of La fanciulla del West. Other accolades include the Premio Opera XXI Barcelona (2020) and the Premio Teatro Real Madrid (2021). Upcoming engagements include Attila at Teatro Real, Tosca at the Hamburg State Opera and Berlin State Opera, Rigoletto at Teatro Regio di Torino, and symphonic concerts with the Stuttgart State Orchestra.
