Myung-Whun Chung
MYUNG-WHUN CHUNG began his musical career as a pianist. In 1979, after a conducting degree in New York, he became the assistant to Carlo Maria Giulini. From 1984 to 1990, he was Music Director of the Radio-Symphony Orchestra in Saarbrücken, 1987 to 1992 he was the primary guest conductor of the Teatro Comunale in Florence, and from 1989-1994 the Music Director of the Opéra Bastille. In 2000, he returned to Paris as the Music Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France. From 1997-2005 he was the primary guest conductor of the Orchestra of Saint Cecilia in Rome. From 2012/2013 he was the primary conductor of the Staatskapelle in Dresden. Outside Europe, he was among others, the Musical Advisor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and since 2006, has been the Musical Director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Myung Whun Chung conducts the most important orchestras of the world (among others, the Wiener and Berliner Philharmonic orchestras, the Concertgebouworkest, the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Orchestra of Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras). He is a commander of l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and became a Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF in 2008. In 2011, he gave his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper with Simon Boccanegra and also conducted Rigoletto and La traviata.
