Baritone LEIGH MELROSE has sung Escamillo, Wozzeck, Golaud, Alberich, Sonora, Ned Keene, Papageno, Conte d’Almaviva and others and performed in many world premieres (among them Dai Fujikura’s Solaris, Johannes Kalitzke’s Die Besessenen, Elliot Carter’s On Conversing with Paradise, Luca Francesconi’s Quartett and James MacMillan’s The Sacrifice). He is one of the most sought-after singers of contemporary music. The long list of productions he has been involved in includes Fiorentino Rihm’s Der Maler träumt at Maggio Musicale, the title role in Birtwistle’s Gawain, Matthias Pintscher’s Solomon’s Garden, Rambo in the staged production of John Adams’s film The Death of Klinghoffer, Michael Collins in Jonathan Dove’s TV opera Man on the Moon, Punch in Birtwistle’s Punch and Judy in Porto, Xenakis’s Ais, Peter Maxwell Davies’s The Martyrdom of St Magnus and Eight Songs for a Mad King, Michael Finnissy’s Maldon and the premiere of Martin Suckling’s Candlebird. He has performed internationally, e.g. at Salzburg Festival, Teatro alla Scala, Triennale Ruhr, Teatro Real Madrid, Zurich Opera, Vlaamse Opera, ENO and in Amsterdam.
