KARITA MATTILA was born in Finland and studied at the Sibelius-Academy in her hometown and in England. In 1983, she won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She has sung at all the important opera houses, like the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Scala, the New York Metropolitan Opera, and sang in Paris, Hamburg, Salzburg, Chicago, Helsinki, Washington and Barcelona. Musical America voted her the Musician of the Year in 2005. Engagements in previous years include among others Emilia Marty in Vec Makropulos at the San Francisco Opera and at the Met as well as the BBC Proms and Finnish National Opera, Lisa in Pique Dame at the Met, Leonore at the Houston Grand Opera, Jenufa at the Bayerischen Staatsoper, the Finnish National Opera and the Hamburg Staatsoper, Ariadne at the ROH Covent Garden and in Paris, Sieglinde in Houston and Marie in Wozzeck at ROH Covent Garden and at the Helsinki-Festival. At the Wiener Staatsoper, she has sung Rosalinde, Donna Elvira and Emma (Fierrabras).
