Josh Lovell
The Canadian tenor Josh Lovell is, among other things, the winner of the 39th International Hans Gábor Belvedere Singing Competition and has been an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera since 2019. In 2022/23 he will make his debut as Ferdinand in Thomas Adès' The Tempest at La Scala in Milan, as Don Ottavio in a new production of Don Giovanni at Oper Leipzig and at Deutsche Oper Berlin as Gérald (Lakmé) in the Berlin Philharmonie. He will also make his debut with Opera Rara and the London Philharmonic as Prince Casimir in a recording and performance of Offenbach's La Princesse de Trébizonde. Most recently Lovell filled in for an ill colleague as the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier at the Bavarian State Opera. In 2021/22 Josh Lovell made his house debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Ernesto (Don Pasquale), in 2020/21 he made his debut at the Bavarian State Opera as Florville in Il signor Bruschino and appeared at the New Generation Festival in Florence as Don Ramiro (La cenerentola). In 2019/20 he made his house debut at the Bolshoi Theatre as Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and appeared in Mozart's Requiem with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Handel's Messiah with the Victoria Symphony, among others. Previous performances include Odoardo (Ariodante), Le Doyen de la Faculté (Cendrillon) and a Trojan (Idomeneo) with Lyric Opera Chicago. He also made role debuts as Count Almaviva at the Aspen Music Festival and Don Ottavio at the New Generation Festival. An avid and seasoned concert artist, Josh Lovell also has extensive experience from numerous performances of the works of Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Britten, Vaughan Williams and Bach. His upcoming season will include debuts with the Canadian Opera Company and the Opéra National de Paris. At the Vienna State Opera he has sung a wide repertoire ranging from Monteverdi (premiere production L'incoronazione die Poppea) and Handel (Lurcanio in Ariodante) to Mozart's Don Ottavio and Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), bel canto (Lucia di Lammermoor), Verdi's Fenton (Falstaff), Puccini's Edmondo (Manon Lescaut) to Narraboth (Salome), Singer (Der Rosenkavalier), Andres in Berg's Wozzeck, Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Henze's Noboru in Das verratene Meer. In the current season he can still be seen here in the new productions of Le nozze di Figaro (Don Basilio), Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria (Telemaco) as well as Ernesto and Lukas in Haydn's Jahreszeiten.
