JOSEPH CALLEJA hails from Malta, where he took up vocal studies at the age of 16. He won numerous prizes, e.g. the Belvedere Singing Competition in 1997, the Caruso Competition in Milan in 1998 and Plácido Domingo's Operalia in 1999. He made his operatic debut as Macduff (in Macbeth) in Malta in 1997. He makes regular guest appearances on stages like Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, Bayerische Staatsoper, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, New York Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Regio in Turin, as well as in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Zurich, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Strasbourg, Dresden, Toronto and at festivals in Salzburg, Wexford, Spoleto, Bregenz, Bergamo and Pesaro. Recently, he has sung the roles of Macduff, Pollione, Duca and Edgardo at the Met; Duca, Cavaradossi and Pinkerton at Bayerische Staatsoper, Gustave III, Cavaradossi and Rodolfo at Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Ruggero (La rondine) in Berlin, Don José in Frankfurt and Chicago. At Vienna State Opera, he made his debut in 2003 as Elvino, and he has also sung the roles of Arturo, Duca, Alfredo, Roberto Devereux, Rodolfo und Nemorino.
