Uruguayan Bass-baritone Erwin Schrott has been acclaimed in the world’s most prestigious theatres such as Teatro alla Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, Washington National Opera, Vienna State Opera, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Hamburg State Opera, Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and many others. 

Born in Montevideo, Erwin started his operatic career at an early age as Roucher in ANDREA CHÉNIER. He won competitions as “Carlos Gomez” and “Juventudes Musicales”, before winning the 1° Prize in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition, in 1998. Since then, his career was launched internationally, making debuts in one major opera house after another.

With Don Giovanni and Leporello in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI, Schrott has celebrated successes internationally. His interpretation of the roles have become a reference in the Mozartian repertoire. Engagements of the title role in Don Giovanni followed in London, Milan, Florence, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Seville, Torino and New York; as well as Figaro at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Zürich Opera and in Valencia. Other roles in his repertoire include Pagano in Verdi ́s I LOMBARDI ALLA PRIMA CROCIATA, the title role in ATTILA, Banquo in MACBETH, Escamillo in CARMEN, MEFISTOFELE from Boito, Berlioz and Gounod as well as Donizetti ́s L’ELISIR D’AMORE. In 2013, he debuted the role of Procida in LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES at Covent Garden, repeating the role later in Copenhagen in 2015 and in a new production of the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2018. 

Highlights of past seasons include appearances in LA GIOCONDA at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, AIDA at the Salzburg Festival and Berlin, L'ELISIR D'AMORE in Orange, MACBETH in Barcelona, L'ELISIR D'AMORE and CARMEN in Vienna, Munich and Verona, IL TURCO IN ITALIA, TOSCA, and LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN in Hamburg. He returns to the Vienna State Opera for TOSCA and I VESPRI SICILIANI and in Barcelona with LA CENERENTOLA. 

Highlights for the 24/25 season are Lucrezia Borgia, Don Carlo and I Masnadieri at Bayerische Staatsoper, Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Vienna, Damnation de Faust in Liege.

He recorded 2 Sony Classical albums: his solo album Arias and the album Rojotango, awarded with the ECHO Classic Award in 2012. Besides his profession onstage, Erwin Schrott dedicates himself to various charity organisations who offer help and support to children in need.
