Denys Cherevychko

Denys Cherevychko was born in Donetsk (Ukraine). He was educated at the Ballet Academy of Vadim Pisarev in his home town as well as at the Heinz-Bosl-Foundation/Ballet Academy in Munich. In 2006 he joined the Ballett der Wiener Staatsoper und Volksoper, in 2008 he was appointed Demi-soloist, in 2009 Soloist and in 2012 First Soloist of the Wiener Staatsballett.

In 2006 he joined the Ballett der Vienna State Opera und Volksoper, in 2008 he was promoted to demi-soloist, the year after to soloist and in 2012 to first soloist of the Vienna State Ballet.

Still member of the Corps de ballet, he was entrusted with solo roles, such as Moritz in »Max und Moritz« by Ferenc Barbay & Michael Kropf (also available on DVD) or Golden Idol in Vladimir Malakhov’s »La Bayadère«. Numerous leading roles followed in the great classical ballets such as Basil in Rudolf Nureyev’s »Don Quixote« (also released on DVD), Prince Siegfried in Nureyev’s »Swan Lake«, Drosselmeyer/The Prince in Nureyev’s »The Nutcracker« and Prince Nutcracker in Gyula Harangozó’s version, Jean de Brienne in Nureyev’s »Raymonda«, James in Pierre Lacotte’s »La Sylphide«, Prinz Florimund and Blauer Vogel in Peter Wright’s »The Sleeping Beauty«, Colas and Alain in Frederick Ashton’s »La Fille mal gardée«, Conrad in Manuel Legris' »Le Corsaire«, Aminta in Manuel Legris’ »Sylvia« and Franz in Pierre Lacotte’s »Coppélia«. But also in numerous other dance styles, such as neo-classical or contemporary, he has always been able to impress, amongst other, as Ulrich in Roland Petit’s »La Chauve-souris«, Joseph in John Neumeier’s »Josephs Legende«, Vaslaw Nijinsky in Neumeier’s »Le Pavillon d’Armide«, TV-Choreograph in Maurice Béjart’s »Le Concours«, Mercutio in John Cranko’s »Romeo and Juliet«, Lenski in John Cranko’s »Onegin«, Bratfisch in Kenneth MacMillan’s »Mayerling«, Puck in Jorma Elo’s »A Midsummer Night’s Dream«, Frédéri in Roland Petit’s »L’Arlésienne«, Koschey in Andrey Kaydanovskiy’s »The Firebird«,  title role in Edward Clug’s »Peer Gynt« and Sol Leóns & Paul Lightfoots »Skew-Whiff« and Hans van Manen's »Solo«. Furthermore, he danced in works by Harald Lander, Serge Lifar, George Balanchine – such as »Theme and Variations«, »Rubies«, »Symphony in C« and »Liebeslieder Walzer« –, Jerome Robbins, Jiří Kylián, Nils Christe, William Forsythe, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Ben van Cauwenbergh, Jiří Bubeníček, David Dawson, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Martin Schläpfer and Alexei Ratmansky's »24 Préludes«.

Denys Cherevychko has appeared as guest dancer in many European Countries and overseas. His numerous awards and honours comprise 1st prizes at the Serge Lifar Wettbewerb, Kiew (2004), Tanzolymp, Berlin (2005), ÖTR-Contest, Vienna (2007), Gold medal at the 25th International Ballet Competition, Varna (2012), Silver medal (juniors) at the USA International Ballet Competition, Jackson (2006) and the Promotion Prize of the Ballettclub Wiener Staatsoper & Volksoper (2006). In 2011 he was nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse for his performance in William Forsythes »The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude«.
