Daniel Jenz
The tenor Daniel Jenz has been a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera since 2020. Recent highlights include his portrayal of the Steersman (The Flying Dutchman) as well as his role debuts as the Cavalier (Cardillac) and Leukippos (Daphne). Furthermore, he performed in new productions at the Vienna State Opera, including Salome(Narraboth), Tristan und Isolde (A Shepherd), and Parsifal (3rd Squire). He also interpreted Froh (Das Rheingold), Jaquino (Fidelio), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Andres (Wozzeck), and Antonio (The Tempest).
He made particularly notable artistic impressions as Nutrice/Primo Famigliare in L'incoronazione di Poppea and as the White Minister in György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre during the 2023/24 season – both premieres at the Vienna State Opera. In 2024, he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the new production of Tristan und Isolde and will also appear there in 2025, including in the new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
Born in Esslingen am Neckar, Daniel Jenz studied at the universities of Mainz and Graz and was a member of the Young Ensemble at the Mainz State Theater. He was awarded the prize at the Federal Singing Competition in 2006, became a Bayreuth Scholar in 2008, and received the Franz Völker Prize for young tenors in 2009.
He was a member of the ensembles at the Stadttheater Hildesheim, the Theater Lübeck, and the Staatstheater Kassel. At these houses, he built an extensive repertoire, including roles such as Baron Kronthal (Der Wildschütz), Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress), Fenton (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Walther von der Vogelweide (Tannhäuser), the Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), and Tamino (The Magic Flute). His performance of seven roles in the rarely staged Christophe Colomb by Darius Milhaud at Theater Lübeck in 2019 received wide acclaim.
Guest engagements have taken him to the Berlin State Opera, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Frankfurt and Bonn Operas, the Hamburg State Opera, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Landestheater Linz, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Bertrand de Billy, Sylvain Cambreling, Thomas Guggeis, Pablo Heras-Casado, René Jacobs, Philippe Jordan, Cornelius Meister, Dennis Russell Davies, Alexander Soddy, and Franz Welser-Möst.
