Christoph Altstaedt

Christoph Altstaedt studied at the Detmold University of Music as a teenager and continued his piano lessons with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, followed by studies at the “Hanns Eisler” Music Academy in Berlin with Hans-Dieter Baum and Alexander Vitlin, among others. He was a scholarship holder of the Conductors’ Forum of the German Music Council and attended courses with Kurt Masur, Pierre Boulez, Sebastian Weigle, Johannes Kalitzke and Jorma Panula. In 2008/09 he assisted James Levine at Tanglewood. In 2002, he founded the Junge Klangforum Mitte Europa, which was honoured with the Japanese Præmium Imperiale and the Marion Dönhoff Prize of the ZEIT Foundation.
As a repetiteur and conductor, Christoph Altstaedt has worked at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he also collaborated closely with Martin Schläpfer’s Ballett am Rhein. He has made guest appearances at the Zurich Opera, the Cologne Opera, the Basel Theatre, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Salzburg and Savonlinna Festivals and the Royal Albert Hall. He works closely with the Finnish National Opera, Opera North Leeds and the Glyndebourne Festival. He has conducted the Royal Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestra London, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Deutsche Radiophilharmonie, hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Radio Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Gürzenich Orchester Köln, Oslo Philharmonic and Indianapolis Symphony. His commitment to working with young talent is reflected in numerous projects with the German National Youth Orchestra, other state youth orchestras, the university
In the 2024/25 season, Altstaedt will conduct a variety of concerts, including performances by the Antwerp Symphony, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Krakow Philharmonic. In January 2025 he presented one of his silent film projects, Stroheim’s The Merry Widow, in collaboration with ensemble resonanz at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Wiener Konzerthaus. In summer 2025, Der Freischütz will follow at the Bregenz Festival.
At the Volksoper Vienna, Christoph Altstaedt collaborated with the Vienna State Ballet on Ein Deutsches Requiem and The moon wears a white shirt. In 2023, he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera, conducting Haydn’s The Seasons choreographed by Martin Schläpfer.
Since 2023/24, Christoph Altstaedt has been held a deputy professorship for conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts.
