Christian Kass

Christian Kass was born in Frankfurt / Main and studied stage design in Salzburg. In 1990 he took up an engagement at the Bavarian State Opera and works there as lighting master since 1997. In 1992 he was Günther Schneider-Siemssen’s personal assistant at the Salzburg Summer Academy. In 1995 he designed a light and multimedia installation for the Mozarteum University Salzburg in the Mozart House. Further light designs he created for »Rigoletto« at the Arena di Verona (1996), »Satori« by Sergei Polunin at the London Coliseum (2017) and »Coal, Ashes and Light« by Kinsun Chan at the Theater St. Gallen (2020), among others. In Munich, he works closely with the Heinz Bosl Foundation and has created light designs for the Bavarian State Ballet since 1999, among others for Kenneth MacMillan’s »Manon«, Ray Barra's »Swan Lake« and »Raymonda«, Ivan Liška’s »Sleeping Beauty«, Terence Kohler’s »Helden« and »Once upon an ever after«, Andrey Kaydanovskiy’s »Cecil Hotel« and »Der Schneesturm« as well as the programme »Les Ballets Russes« with works by Mikhail Fokine, Vaslav Nijinsky and Bronislava Nijinska.
In 2021/22, Christian Kass will work for the first time at the Volksoper Wien as light designer for Andrey Kaydanovskiy’s world premiere as part of the ballet programme »Begegnungen«.
