Christian Gerhaher

During his studies with Paul Kuën and Raimund Grumbach, Christian Gerhaher attended the opera school at the Munich Hochschule für Musik and studied lied singing with Friedemann Berger together with Gerold Huber. In addition to studying medicine, he rounded out his vocal training in master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Inge Borkh. Currently, Christian Gerhaher himself teaches occasionally at the Munich Hochschule für Musik und Theater as well as at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Together with his regular piano partner Gerold Huber, he has now dedicated himself to Lied interpretation for 30 years - in concerts and in recordings - for many years awarded with significant prizes. The Lied Duo is at home on the stages of the international Lied centers: in the New York halls, in the Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, in the Cologne and Berlin Philharmonie, in the Paris Cité de la musique, in the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, in the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and especially in London's Wigmore Hall. The duo also performs regularly at important festivals.

Collaborations with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding, Herbert Blomstedt, Bernard Haitink, Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Andris Nelsons, Kent Nagano and Mariss Jansons have led and continue to lead him to the most important concert halls in the world. Among the orchestras with which Christian Gerhaher works particularly frequently are the London Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouworkest and especially the Berlin Philharmonic, of which he was the first singer to be Artist in Residence, as well as the Radio Symphony Orchestras of the Swedish and especially the Bavarian Radio.

Christian Gerhaher is a sought-after performer not only in the lied and concert repertoire, but also on the opera stage, where he has been awarded the "Laurence Olivier Award" and the "Der Faust" theater prize, among others. His roles include Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Posa (Don Carlo), Amfortas (Parsifal under Kirill Petrenko), Lenau (Lunea Holliger, premiere 2018), Figaro and Conte (Le nozze di Figaro) as well as the title roles in Don Giovanni, in Debussy's Pelléas und Mélisande (CD on LSO Live, Sir Simon Rattle) and in Henze's Der Prinz von Homburg. The key role of Wolfram in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser was and remains a constant in his calendar at the houses of Berlin, London and Munich. A milestone in Christian Gerhaher's operatic career was his debut as Wozzeck in September 2015 in Andreas Homoki's acclaimed production at Zurich Opera House. Also in Zurich was his role debut as Simon Boccanegra (Fabio Luisi/Andreas Homoki) in November 2020. At his parent house, the Bavarian State Opera, followed or will follow, among others, the revival of Tannhäuser as well as in May 2021 and Amfortas in April 2022, also Giorgio Germont (La traviata) at the ROH Covent Garden.

He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2010 as Wolfram.
As an exclusive partner, Christian Gerhaher releases his CDs with Sony Music. With his pianist Gerold Huber, his recordings include Schubert, Schumann and Mahler cycles. Together with BR Klassik and the Heidelberg Lied Center, a large-scale complete recording of all of Robert Schumann's songs is currently being made on Sony Classical. In November 2018, the first album Frage was released, for which Christian Gerhaher was awarded both the Gramophone Award and the Opus Klassik as Singer of the Year.
