The American bass-baritone ALAN HELD was born in Washburn (Illinois) and has performed in all important opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Paris Opera, the Bayerischen Staatsoper, the Milan Scala, the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Hamburgischen Staatsoper, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, the Washington National Opera, the Netherlands Opera and the Théâtre La Monnaie in Brussels. His numerous roles include Wotan in the Ring des Nibelungen, Amfortas in Parsifal, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürn­berg, Scarpia in Tosca, the four villains in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Jochanaan in Salome, Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde, Don Pizzaro in Fidelio, Orest in Elektra, Balstrode in Peter Grimes and the leading roles in Gianni Schicchi, Der fliegende Holländer, Wozzeck and Car­dillac. Recently, he has sung at the Washington Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Bayerischen Staatsoper, in Montreal and in Toronto.  Alan Held can be found on a large number of CD and DVD recordings. Since 2014, he teaches singing at the Wichita State University. In 2001, he gave his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper with the role of Wotan in Das Rheingold and went on to sing the villains in in Hoffmann and Jochanaan.
