Andreas Schager
Austrian heldentenor Andreas Schager studied at the University of Music in Vienna and initially sang lyric Mozart and operetta roles before switching in 2011 to the heroic roles of Wagner and Strauss. His highly acclaimed début in summer of 2009 as David in »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg« at the Tyrolean Festival Erl was soon followed by the roles of Florestan (»Fidelio«), Max (»Der Freischütz«), Rienzi, Tristan and the Siegfried roles at smaller and medium-sized theatres. His international breakthrough came when her performed Siegfried in »Götterdämmerung« at La Scala Milan, at the Berlin State Opera and at the BBC Proms in London under Daniel Barenboim in 2013. Today, Andreas Schager has established himself as a leading heldentenor and works at the big houses and festivals around the world as well as at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Opéra de Bastille, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, La Scala Milan, Teatro real Madrid, Zurich Opera House, the opera houses in Frankfurt, Leipzig and Wiesbaden as well as the Bayreuth Festival. He collaborates with conductors such as Philippe Jordan, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Valery Gergiev, Simone Young, Daniele Gatti, Franz Welser-Möst, Kent Nagano and Riccardo Chailly. Recent opera highlights include »Fidelio«, »Tristan und Isolde«, »Parsifal«, »Siegfried« and »Götterdämmerung« at the Berlin State Opera, »Götterdämmerung« at Semperoper Dresden, »Tannhäuser« at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Parsifal and Tristan at Opéra Bastille, Menelas (»Die ägyptische Helena«) at La Scala Milan, Siegfried at Hamburg State Opera, and his début at the Metropolitan Opera New York under Philippe Jordan, as well as Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival. In addition to his outstanding opera successes, Andreas Schager is also active on the concert stage. Highlights in recent years include appearances with Franz Welser-Möst in Cleveland, Carnegie Hall and at the New Year's Eve concert at Semperoper Dresden, »Gurrelieder« at the Philharmonie de Paris, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Vienna Konzerthaus with the Vienna Philharmonic under Philippe Jordan, »Das Lied von der Erde« under Valery Gergiev at the Philharmonie of the Gasteig and at the Elbphilharmonie, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in Washington and under Riccardo Chailly in Lucerne, as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Marek Janowski and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra at Konzerthaus Berlin. At the Wiener Staatsoper he as appeared as Apollo (»Daphne«), Lohengrin, Tamino, Kaiser (»Die Frau ohne Schatten«), Max (»Der Freischütz«), and Florestan (»Fidelio«). Engagements in 2020/21 include Siegfried in the new »Ring« cycle at Opéra Bastille under the direction of Philippe Jordan, Parsifal at Berlin State Opera with Daniel Barenboim on the podium, Rienzi at Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Siegfried at Theater real de Madrid.
