Jörg Schneider
The Austrian tenor Jörg Schneider has been an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera since September 2017, after a ten-year tenure with the Vienna Volksoper. His recent performances include Pygmalion in Suppé's Die schöne Galathée at Munich’s Prinzregententheater, Mime in a concert version of the Ring under Marek Janowski in Dresden, Iro (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria) at the Versailles Opera House (including a CD recording), as well as performances at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and a concert series in Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Austria under Renée Jacobs. Additional roles include Mime (Das Rheingold) at the Hamburg State Opera, Sultan Soliman (Zaide) at the Prinzregententheater in Munich, and Die schöne Magelone by Brahms with Julia Stemberger at the Vienna Musikverein. Other notable engagements have taken him to the Liceu in Barcelona as Leukippos (Daphne), the Stadttheater Klagenfurt as Narraboth (Salome), and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail). In 2018, he debuted at the Salzburg Festival, in 2019 at Glyndebourne, and in 2017 as the Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Bavarian State Opera. He has also sung David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) in Tokyo, Belmonte at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Flamand (Capriccio) at the Budapest MÜPA, Italian Singer (Capriccio) at the Theater an der Wien, and Schubert (Dreimäderlhaus) at the Summer Arena in Baden.
Schneider has also had successful appearances at La Scala, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Real Madrid, Semperoper, Stuttgart State Opera, Théâtre De La Monnaie in Brussels, Zurich Opera House, and numerous Italian theaters, including Teatro Bellini di Catania, Teatro Regio di Parma, and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. He has also performed at festivals such as the Seefestspiele Mörbisch and in concert venues including the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, as well as in Tokyo and Hong Kong. As a concert singer, Schneider has appeared at prestigious venues like the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Konzerthaus, Brucknerhaus Linz, Dresden Philharmonie, Radio France, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. His concert repertoire includes Haydn’s The Creation, Schumann's Dichterliebe, Bach's St. John Passion, Mozart's Requiem, Verdi's Messa da Requiem, Berlioz’s Te Deum, and Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Walpurgisnacht.
From 2016 to 2020, he taught solo singing at the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna, and since 2020 he has taught at the Franz Schubert Conservatory. In 2022, he also took on a teaching position at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW). Since 2016, he has served as artistic director of the concert series Freunde der Operette in St. Pölten, and in 2018 he was appointed president of the music association Freunde der Operette. At the Vienna State Opera, he has sung in numerous premiere and repertoire performances, most recently as Mime (Das Rheingold, Siegfried), Erik (The Flying Dutchman), Tamino (The Magic Flute), Aegisth (Elektra), Narraboth and Herod (Salome), and the Captain (Wozzeck).
Born in Wels, Schneider received his first musical training with the Vienna Boys’ Choir and studied with Prof. Elfriede Obrowsky in Vienna. In 1995, he joined the ensemble of the Wiesbaden State Theatre, and from 1997 to 2000, he was an ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf. His recordings include Alfred (Die Fledermaus) with Nightingale Classics, Stanislaus (Der Vogelhändler) for the Seefestspiele Mörbisch, and Marchese Sebastianini (Der lustige Krieg). In 2012, he released an operetta arias CD with Capriccio, followed by his solo CD Der Mensch denkt und Gott lenkt in 2022.
