Martin Chaix

Martin Chaix received his training at the École de Danse de l’Opéra national de Paris. In 1999 he joined the Paris Opera Ballet, in 2006 he moved to the Leipzig Ballet as a soloist, and from 2009 to 2015 he danced with the Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg. His career as a dancer has been characterised by a wide range of different styles and signatures, including works and creations by George Balanchine, Pina Bausch, Carolyn Carlson, John Cranko, Merce Cunningham, Mats Ek, Marco Goecke, Jiří Kylián, Edouard Lock, John Neumeier, Rudolf Nureyev, Roland Petit, Martin Schläpfer, Uwe Scholz and Hans van Manen. In 2006, Martin Chaix made his debut as a choreographer with the piece Pars de l’Autre, created for dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet, and in 2010 he took part in the renowned Noverre Young Choreographers evening in Stuttgart. Since then, he has created more than 30 ballets for companies such as the Leipzig Ballet, the Ballett am Rhein, the ballet ensembles of the Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken, the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater, the Croatian National Theatre in Split and Rijeka, the BallettCompagnie Oldenburg, the Ballett Cottbus, the Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin and the Bolshoi Ballet Moscow. Furthermore, Martin Chaix has created several pieces for independent projects such as Eine Winterreise at the Bonner Brotfabrik or Und so weiter ... at the Moritzbastei in Leipzig. His intensive work with students and pupils has taken Martin Chaix to the KK Youth Project in Japan, Austinmer Dance Theatre in Australia and Gymnasium Essen-Werden. Most recently, he created Ma Mère l’Oye for the renowned École de Danse de l’Opéra national de Paris with performances at the Palais Garnier. In addition to his various choreographic projects, Martin Chaix makes short films and takes photographs. One of his works was selected for the One Minute Film Festival in Amsterdam in 2013.
Martin Chaix will make his Vienna debut with the world premiere of M to M as part of the Vienna State Ballet program Kreationen in June 2025.
