Piotr Beczala
Equally fêted by audiences and critics, Piotr Beczała is one of the most popular tenors of our time and a regular guest at the world’s leading opera houses. He was born in southern Poland and studied at the Academy of Music in Katowice with Pavel Lisitsian and Sena Jurinac. Recent appearances include Jontek in a new production of Stanisław Moniuszko’s »Halka« at the Theater an der Wien and Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, Lohengrin and the Prince in »Rusalka« at the Wiener Staatsoper, where he débuted in 1996 and has so far sung in just under 100 performances. Since his début as the Duke in 2006, Piotr Beczała has been a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera, where he has so far sung Lensky (»Eugene Onegin«), the Prince (»Rusalka«), Edgardo (»Lucia di Lammermoor«), Rodolfo (»La Bohème«), Vaudémont (»Iolanta«), Riccardo and the title roles in »Roméo et Juliette« and »Faust«. In 2011 he accompanied the Metropolitan Opera to Japan, and in 2012 he made his role début as Des Grieux in Massenet’s »Manon«. Piotr Beczała is also a regular guest at Milan’s La Scala and Munich’s Bavarian State Opera. He recently appeared at the Munich Festival as Riccardo. Guest appearances include the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Gran Teatre del Liceu, San Francisco Opera, Dutch National Opera, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Berlin State Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Teatr Wielki Warsaw, the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg and the Salzburg Festival, where recent appearances include Rodolfo, Vaudémont, Faust and Werther. In 2016 he made his début beside Anna Netrebko as Lohengrin at Dresden’s Semperoper under the baton of Christian Thielemann. Besides his opera career Piotr Beczała is much in demand as a concert and Lieder artist. Engagements have taken him to Baden-Baden, Amsterdam, Madrid, Budapest, Vienna, Milan and Oman, among others. Piotr Beczała features on dozens of CDs and DVDs with a wide-ranging repertoire. In 2014 he was awarded the ECHO Klassik as »Singer of the year«.
