Event Hall
Today the Gustav Mahler Hall is not only used as an intermission room, but also as a concert hall, for example for the chamber music matinees of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra or for morning concerts of the ensemble members of the Vienna State Opera‘s Orchestra.
The auditions for becoming a member are held in this room. In the first rounds, these take place anonymously behind a folding screen. Thus, the jury can only hear the applicants, but cannot see them. Later on, the members of the Vienna State Opera‘s Orchestra can become eligible for membership in the (private) association of the Vienna Philharmonic. Hence, the Vienna State Opera’s orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic are two organizationally different orchestras, but they are practically identical.
In addition, numerous discussion and mediation events take place in the Mahler Hall: For example, free introductory talks are offered before many opera and ballet performances and events of the Official Circle of Friends of the Vienna State Opera are also held in the Gustav Mahler Hall.
In preparation of the Vienna State Opera Ball, which is the most internationally renowned ball event, broadcasted worldwide by ORF. For this both the auditions and the rehearsals of the débutantes are held in the Mahler Hall.
