The new season 2019 | 2020 at the Wiener Staatsoper
Wiener Staatsoper Director Dominique Meyer, Ballet Director Manuel Legris and Managing Director Thomas W. Platzer held a press conference today, Wednesday 3 April 2019, at which they announced the programme for the forthcoming 2019/2020 season.
The programme for the 2019/2020 season at the Wiener Staatsoper offers a unique spectrum of 58 different works of opera (including children’s operas). These range from Handel’s Ariodante to Eötvös’s Tri Sestri, Trojahn’s Orest, Staud’s Die Weiden and the world premières of Albin Fries’s Persinette and Olga Neuwirth’s Orlando. And finally, there are also 21 different ballets (in ten full-length compilations). Apart from these, there are also special children’s programmes as well as numerous concerts, matinées and special events.
Tickets for all performances of the season 2019 | 2020 can be ordered from now on.
There will be over 350 performances on the programme during the 2019/2020 season, including 223 opera performances (including The Magic Flute for Children), 54 ballet performances, 9 concerts, 11 vocal matinées, 10 chamber music matinées, 5 other matinées as well as numerous children’s opera performances, children’s concerts and other events in the AGRANA STUDIOBÜHNE | WALFISCHGASSE.

Ballet Director Manuel Legris will be presenting three premières at the Wiener Staatsoper:
- George Balanchine’s Jewels with Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds (2 November 2019; conductor: Paul Connelly);
- the three-part performance of Lukács | Lidberg | Duato (4 March 2020 – conductor: Fayçal Karoui) with Movements to Stravinsky by András Lukács, Between Dogs and Wolves by Pontus Lidberg (world première) and White Darkness by Nacho Duato and the
- 2020 Nureyev Gala (25 June 2020 – conductor: Kevin Rhodes).
The new season will also see the débuts of many artists, such as the conductors Nicholas Carter, Hartmut Haenchen, Michele Mariotti, Matthias Pintscher and Alberto Veronesi and directors Amélie Niermayer and Chiara Muti. Singers performing for the Wiener Staatsoper audience for the first time in 2019/2020 will include Michelle Bradley, Emily D’Angelo, Christine Goerke, Frederica Lombardi, Regula Mühlemann, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Evgenia Muraveva, Marina Prudenskaya, Ausrine Stundyte, Atalla Ayan, Brian Jagde.

The wide-ranging programme of operas and ballets will be rounded off by several well-established event series:
- Recitals: internationally acclaimed singers will perform attractive concert programmes on eight evenings.
- Matinee series Ensemble Matinee in the Mahler-Saal: on seven different dates, young ensemble singers will be showcasing their talent outside the regular performance schedule. They will be accompanied on the piano by the répétiteurs of the opera house.
- Chamber Music Cycle of the Vienna Philharmonic: in ten matinées, members of the Vienna Philharmonic will present a diverse programme of chamber music in various different ensembles – in the 2019/2020 season, works by Ludwig van Beethoven.
To commemorate Beethoven Year, the Wiener Staatsoper will be performing not only Fidelio, but also a première production of the original version of this work (Leonore). The “Vienna Philharmonic Chamber Music” matinée series will be presenting a Beethoven cycle, and members of the Wiener Staatsoper ensemble will be performing all of Beethoven’s lieder in four concerts over a weekend in the Gustav Mahler Hall at the Vienna State Opera.
Finally, many of the ensemble singers engaged between 2010 and 2020, and who are today familiar names in the world of opera, will be giving a Gala Concert to end the season (28 June 2020).
Apart from performances of the operas for children Cinderella and Pünktchen and Anton and the children’s concerts and educational programmes Peter and the Wolf, The Carnival of the Animals and That’s Opera!, the AGRANA STUDIO STAGE | WALFISCHGASSE will host a varied programme in the 2019/2020 season including artists in conversation with Staatsoper Director Dominique Meyer, amongst others, introductory musical events, master classes, concerts, readings, lectures on opera history and other topics, and events put on by the Opera School and Ballet Academy.
In the next season, the Wiener Staatsoper will go on tour with a concert performance of Don Giovanni in Geneva (Victoria Hall) on 12 December 2019.
On 20 February 2020, the 64th Vienna Opera Ball will take place: the opera house will again be transformed into a gigantic ballroom, where two performances of The Magic Flute for children will be given the following day.
During the 2019/2020 season the WIENER STAATSOPER live at home programme will broadcast a total of 45+ performances live on the internet in excellent picture and sound quality.

The Wiener Staatsoper has developed this new technology for a live schools programme on selected dates in order to make its portfolio available to large numbers of young people throughout Austria and abroad: Wiener Staatsoper live@school. This will enable students to discover the opera house and its many professions, experience live rehearsals, and watch live broadcasts of opera or ballet performances together in the morning during school hours thanks to time-shifted broadcasts.
“Live Opera on the Square” will again feature a selection of around 20 opera and ballet performances per month that will be transmitted live on Herbert von Karajan Square outside the opera house in September, April, May and June. In addition, all performances from 27 December 2019 to 1 January 2020 as well as the New Year’s Concert of the Wiener Philharmoniker will also be screened live on the square. Die Fledermaus on 31 December will be a contribution to the City of Vienna’s “New Year’s Eve Trail”.
