»Schwanensee« and »Eugen Onegin« on »Staatsopern-Mittwoch« at Vienna's Rathausplatz

We are pleased to inform you about further dates for our »Staatsopern-Mittwoch« (i.e. every Wednesday the Vienna State Opera provides the programme) at the Film Festival at Vienna's Rathausplatz.

PROGRAMME

Wednesday, 2 August:
Schwanensee (2014) Ballet
Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowsky
Start: 9.00 p.m.

It is the most famous ballet of all time: the tragic story of Prince Siegfried and the Swan Princess Odette. Until today, the St. Petersburg choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, which first did justice to Tchaikovsky's groundbreaking score in 1895, is considered the epitome of romantic ballet fairy tales. This version served as the basis for Rudolf Nureyev's Vienna »Swan Lake« in 1964, paying homage to the exceptional dancer who passed away 30 years ago. The cast includes Olga Esina, Vladimir Shishov, Eno Peci and Dagmar Kronberger. Conducting the orchestra is Alexander Ingram.

Wednesday, 9 August:
Eugen Onegin (2020)
Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowsky
Start: 9 p.m.

An equally wandering and emotionally detached »dandy« coldly rejects the love of a landowner's daughter, while she grows stronger from this rejection, he crumbles due to his own neglect. Director and set designer Dmitri Tcherniakov has created a hermetic, classicist dining room in which a timeless inner drama unfolds. The central design element is a long table where the characters meet in various configurations. In this symbolic space, the tangible alienation of the characters becomes even more evident. The roles of Tatiana and Onegin are performed by Nicole Car and André Schuen, respectively. Tomáš Hanus conducts the performance.

PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN AT THE FILM FESTIVAL

Friday, 11 August:
Patchwork (2017)
Tristan Schulze
Start: 5.00 p.m.

Patchwork, a commissioned production by the Vienna State Opera to composer Tristan Schulze, tells the story of two families who, after facing obstacles and challenges, come together to form a blended family. After initial arguments, a cautious approach unfolds throughout the opera, with reservations, fears, and joys.
