»SAFETY CURTAIN« 2021/22 BY BEATRIZ MILHAZES
Today, Thursday, October 21, 2021, the temporary "Iron Curtain" 2021/22 was presented: State Opera Director Bogdan Roščić, museum in progress Managing Director Kaspar Mühlemann Hartl, expert and jury member Bice Curiger and Brazilian Ambassador José Antônio Marcondes de Carvalho presented the work "Pink Sunshine" by renowned Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. This is the first Latin American artist of the project. An international jury composed of Daniel Birnbaum, Bice Curiger and Hans-Ulrich Obrist is responsible for the selection of artists.
The large-scale painting (176 m2) by Beatriz Milhazes is already the 24th edition of the exhibition series "Iron Curtain" conceived by museum in progress (mip.at) and realized since 1998 in cooperation with the Vienna State Opera and the Bundestheater-Holding and can be seen until the end of June 2022.
The stage orchestra of the Vienna State Opera provided the musical supporting program. Another highlight was the ballet choreography Solo for Liz, created especially for the presentation by ballet director Martin Schläpfer, inspired by Beatriz Milhazes' Iron Curtain and danced by Brazilian State Ballet dancer Sinthia Liz.
On the occasion of the project, a limited edition signed print by Beatriz Milhazes will be released at museum in progress. By purchasing these art prints, art and opera lovers make an important contribution to the continuation of the "Iron Curtain" exhibition series.
Beatriz Milhazes (*1960, Rio de Janeiro) presented her works in countless exhibitions worldwide, including: Venice Biennale (2003), Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (2012), Fondation Beyeler in Basel (2011), Fondation Cartier in Paris (2009), Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (2012), Museum of Modern Art in New York (2000), Pérez Art Museum Miami (2014) and White Cube Bermondsey (2018). The Museu de Arte de São Paulo and the Instituto Cultural Itaú in São Paulo jointly realized a comprehensive retrospective of the artist in 2020 / 2021. Currently, a major solo exhibition is taking place at the Long Museum in Shanghai. Beatriz Milhazes lives in Rio de Janeiro.
