»Faust« on »Staatsopern-Mittwoch« at Vienna's Rathausplatz

We are delighted to present you with the programme for the final »Staatsopern-Mittwoch« (i.e. every Wednesday the Vienna State Opera provides the programme) at the Film Festival this summer.

Frank Castorf, perhaps the most influential director in the German-speaking theater world over the past 20 years, made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2021 with this production. In his staging, the Paris of the time of the premiere of Faust collides with the Paris of the 1960s. Through cinematic techniques such as cuts and crossfades, the few steps through the miniature Paris transform into chases, time leaps, or dreams. At the same time, Castorf continues the unfinished stories of Gounod's opera through video. The cast of singers is of the highest caliber: Juan Diego Flórez made his theatrical role debut as Faust in this production. Nicole Car, appearing for the first time at the house, portrayed Marguerite. The promising young Polish bass Adam Palka, making his house debut, embodies Méphistophélès, as does Étienne Dupuis in the role of Valentin. Bertrand de Billy conducts the performance.
