Alexei Ratmansky: »24 Préludes« (Marcos Menha, Arne Vandervelde, Alexey Popov)

Alexei Ratmansky »24 Préludes«

With Alexei Ratmansky, Wiener Staatsballett presents a contemporary dance maker who knows how to stimulate the forms and aesthetics of classical ballet with a light hand, great versatility and immense musicality. From his native city of St. Petersburg his career has taken him first to the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, whose director he became in 2004, and on to New York, where he has exerted a formative influence as Artist in Residence at the American Ballet Theatre since 2009. His »24 Préludes« are a »ballet of mood«, in which eight dancers, always moving along a fine line between the abstract and the narrative, respond ravishingly to the moods of the music and unfold a whole range of emotions. Created in 2013 for the Royal Ballet London, Alexei Ratmansky has commissioned the Dutch artist Keso Dekker for the Viennese premiere of his »24 Préludes« with a new design that unfolds a sophisticated interplay of colours.
