KS Adrian Eröd

The Austrian baritone KS Adrian Eröd has been delighting audiences at his home stage, the Wiener Staatsoper, and the international press and public with his vocal versatility for years. Under Christian Thielemann he sang Sixtus Beckmesser in Wagner’s »The Mastersingers of Nuremberg« with such resounding success that he was invited to perform the role at the 2009 Bayreuth Festival. He has since appeared as Beckmesser in guest performances in Zurich, Cologne, Leipzig, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Dresden and at the Salzburg Easter Festival. His performance as Loge in the Vienna production of »Das Rheingold« was also internationally acclaimed, he had a sensational success at the Bregenz Festival as Shylock in the world première of Tchaikovsky’s »The Merchant of Venice«, and in 2014 he débuted at the Salzburg Festival as Farinal in Harry Kupfer’s highly-praised production of »Der Rosenkavalier«. Since his 2001 début at the Wiener Staatsoper as Mercutio (»Roméo et Juliette«) Adrian Eröd has sung roles such as Guglielmo, Count Almaviva (»Cosí fan tutte«), Figaro (»Il barbiere di Siviglia«), Billy Budd, Pelléas, Eisenstein, Valentin (»Faust«), Albert (»Werther«), Frank/Fritz (»Die tote Stadt«), Olivier (»Capriccio«), Jason, the male lead written for him in the world première of Aribert Reimann’s »Medea«, and Prospero in the Austrian première of Thomas Adès’s »The Tempest«, conducted by the composer. Besides the Wiener Staatsoper, he has sung in houses including Dresden’s Semperoper, Berlin State Opera, Milan’s La Scala, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Opéra de Paris, Houston Grand Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Frankfurt Opera and the New National Theatre Tokyo. After studying at Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts, among others with Walter Berry, Adrian Eröd went from the Landestheater Linz to the Wiener Volksoper and finally the Wiener Staatsoper, which will continue to play a central role in his artistic future alongside his coming international engagements. Besides the opera stage, he is also extremely successful in concert. For example, he has sung with the Vienna Philharmonic under conductors Riccardo Muti and Nikolaus Harnoncourt, with the Berlin Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann and Sir Simon Rattle, Orff’s »Carmina Burana« with Fabio Luisi and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Bach’s St John Passion with Philippe Jordan, and Bach’s »St Matthew Passion« and Brahms‘»Ein deutsches Requiem« under Helmut Rilling, Fauré’s Requiem with the Staatskapelle Dresden under Myung-Whun Chung and Mendelssohn’s »Elijah« with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Marek Janowski. He has appeared at the Suntory Hall Tokyo, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, the Auditorio Nacional Madrid, Wiener Musikverein and Wiener Konzerthaus, the Lucerne Festival, Salzburg Mozart Week, and Graz’s Styriarte. (Among others, he has worked with Maximilian Schell, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Uri Caine, Ingo Metzmacher, Christoph Eschenbach, Ulf Schirmer, Thomas Hengelbrock, Vladimir Fedoseev and the ensemble modern). Adrian Eröd is particularly fond of Lieder, and his appearances with this art form include the Wiener and Graz Musikvereins, Linz’s Brucknerhaus, the Lisztzentrum Raiding, Tokyo Spring Festival and the Carinthian Summer Music Festival, in close collaboration with the pianist Helmut Deutsch.
